Mathias, a native of Bechtelsville, was a member of the 1957 Eastern League Champion Reading Indians, where he went 5-4 with a 3.35 ERA that season. Over two seasons in Reading, he compiled a 16-12 mark with a 3.94 ERA over 70 games (27 starts). In 1960, Mathias appeared in 7 games with the Cleveland Indians and compiled a 0-1 mark. Later that year, Mathias was drafted by the Washington Senators in the Expansion Draft, and pitched for the team in 1961 (0-1, 11.20 ERA). 

Before his professional baseball career, Mathias played for Oley Township H.S. (now Oley Valley H.S.) and Boyertown Legion. Nicknamed Stubby, Mathias tossed six no-hitters for the Oley Township High School Lynx and later coached Oley Legion baseball (1965-72). In 1954 he won the Berks County Northern Division basketball scoring title.
